Walker is singing a song, he is a singer.

Brel was sing a song, but he was a chansonier.

It is a very great difference, there is no tradition of the torch song in the manner of brel, even the english phrase torch song doesn't cover it.
It is a uniquely french phenomena, so if it doesn't translate it can hardly be blamed on Walker.

have a listen to Walkes recorded versions of Brel, there's a lot more passion there than here.

Sense some anti-English vibes from this fool. She's much more talented then Scott Wanker. Also she's hardly in the thing so I don't inderstand your problem.

agreed!
1) Scott Walker or Michael Buble...hmm tough one!

2) Scott Walker is a genius. so is Brel, but there's no point copying the song exactly is there?

also, isn't Brel Belgian?

3) Its not from the 50s

When Brel sings the song, he injects it with heartbreak. Walker gives the song a very amusing tone in my opinion.

As you say. There is no point in copying a song exactly.

First of all I wouldn't want Walker to even try copying it.

The only thing I find amusing is the tackyness and that isn't a positive.

I just don't think he puts any soul into it.

Yeh Brel is Belgium but the French adore him he's a bit of a Legend over there, like Sinatra to the Americans etcet.

Yep I know he's a Belgium "bobferris' but he's embraced by the french just like Django Rinehardt.

Also bobferris stop knit picking, you know my point and your just trying to sound like a smartass.

What some people here don't seem to realize is that Walker isn't trying to be traditionally "moving" like Brel, his genius is in how he sings every lyric with the same level of emotion. He's interested in tone more so than hammy expression.
kadaj112 (September 23, 2008 at 3:55 am)
But his tone is crap, everyone knows he isn't trying to move like Brel- but he could at least sing with more heart.

Scott removed all raw emotion and passion from this song... when you see Jacques singing it, you feel it. You feel it's real, he really hates and loves Mathilde, and he IS going to hell for it!

I agree with you. But I would say give Scott a break on this. He has all the stage presence of a preying mantis with shin splints. Whereas Brel was a genius on stage and a great pantomime.

Maybe he has talents as a singer. But this piece puts me off listening to him enough.
