The NASA IKHANA Unmanned Aircraft

Back

NASA has acquired a Predator B unmanned aircraft system to conduct Earth science and technology development missions. Named "Ikhana" a Native American Choctaw word meaning intelligent, the aircraft will fly long-endurance, high-altitude flights from its base at the Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards, Calif. Atmospheric and remote sensing instruments will be installed in the aircraft or in external pods to collect data on flights lasting up to 30 hours.

Since 911 these suckers were sold $16M a piece, on average 3500 homeless veterners would have found shelter in rainy nights.
There is no standing army to respond to technological challenge for civilians in Iraq, Afghanistan or gaza.

Tracking is easy with LiDAR & Radar/Laser detecters used in vehicles to avoid speeding tickets.
It will be morally right to shoot down drones/predators, just 3 Miles high ;-)

it is being used for research.
nothing Earth shattering about that!

Ever heard of a magnetized wings, bi plane? Four wings and lower wings are half size of upper; but both are highly magnetized and much less vibration of air drag.

I didn't see any position markers or strobes on this thing. I think, since it's not on a secret mission, that they should paint it a darker color and put the strobes on it in case something goes wrong and other pilots encounter it at lower altitudes.
