Michael Parenti -- Support our Troops?

Back

The exercise of U.S. power is intended to preserve not only the
international capitalist system but U.S. hegemony of that system.

Why are we locked into such empty political rhetoric? In a recent post "Support Our Troops?" I tried to look at the mentality of supporting our troops and why I believe support is horrendously misplaced in this nation. The post was later published as a letter to the editor in the Modesto Bee. Another letter writer, a few days later, hoped that I was not the first person these soldiers see when they come home. I beg to differ. But first we must look at the mentality and why it is so pervasive.

The "support" of our troops has been wielded over us like a sword of Damocles by the current Administration. It has been used to garner support for not our troops but rather the war. I will not and cannot support any war. How then can one who completely disagrees with war "support our troops"? It is not really possible. For any change to happen we have to look past this truly empty political rhetoric and find the heart of the issue. I "support" our troops in that I want them all brought home, alive and unharmed, now! Why is that such a difficult concept for "patriotic" Americans to understand? Forget the political rhetoric and bring our troops home now.

This is a volunteer army. They know what they're getting into. They're not being forced to fight. They want to fight and kill. So please stop with the heroic sacrifice shit. Freedom is not defended. No one here is free. Everyone is chained to their jobs and possessions. Everyone is a slave to money. Exploitation is the American way. Freedom must come from within.

saving from what? iraq did not threaten us, it did not attack us. as far as iraqis see it, we came in, overthrew sadam and took power. and we are not leaving anytime soon. can you blame them for resenting the soldiers

They look at americans as someone who try to exploit theyr land. Its all reminds me the hitler and stalin thing where neither side was actually liberating , cuz instead of ones concentration camps. The only reason we call iraqis a terrorists is because they fight back with weapons they can use. They would use tanks and planes if they had ones , but instead they have to go with snipers and IEDs.
