carrier crash landings are a regular occurence, the exact number annualy is classified. so I wonder if the vertical landing capability of the JSF meant precisely to address this? as a Seattle native I was disappointed Boeing didn't get awarded the JSF contract (though Boeing is a subcontractor). Still, the F-35 is pretty amazing. It's like a big Transformer.

When the horizontal velocity goes down to zero and the plane is slowly descending to the ground vertically. What would happen if the engine dies and then starts working again? will the plane be able to gain enough speed horizontally to avoid crashing in that short amount of time??

no, it would end in a crash. But ejection would be possible.
