Hi!
I was taught this technique. It's a bit tricky (for me), but basically this is it:
Hold the tong by the reins, so that the hinge-plate's set is turned away from the smith, and with the tongs nearly vertical, settle that set on the face of the anvil, and then hit the top set (which leads to the bits) with the very edge of the hammer, as close to the bits as possible. If you manage it, you'll have a stockier hinge-plate, which should handle heavy stuff a little better.
