Was,is & will always be my favourite fighter. If only the USN/DICK cheney had the brains to upgrade it, I'm sure it'd have been one of the most potent fighter/bombers ever in service. Each carrier should've had at least 6 of these still on them.

Yes the Tomcat was agile for its size and weight. But isn't it better just to design a smaller, lighter plane like the Hornet than to make a big heavy plane agile?

It was defeated, just not when flown by us. One of the Iranian ones was shot down. As for retirement, as others have noted it was very complex and maintenance intensive, especially when compared to the Hornet.

Ok you have me there about the Tomcat being defeated but as you have pointed out not while an American Pilot and Rio where flying it. That just proves how inept the Irainian pilots where As A former fighter pilot once said "You can put a well trained Pilot in an old plane and a average pilot in say an F/A 18 F Super Hornet and the well trained pilot will just about always win unless he makes a stupid FATAL Mistake."

Oh, I'm in complete agreement about our aviators and RIOs. Actually that's the point I was trying to make, though I made it badly. The pilots are the most important factor in the equation. And I wasn't carping on the F-14, one of the greatest planes ever, just making a tiny correction to the historical record. :-)

Great video. Dubious music. Great plane. But greatest fighter ever? How about the P-51 Mustang? Or among its peers the F-15 is generally acknowledged to be superior. I'm guessing you flew it, but not the others.

Your right its not the best fighter! But it certanly is the best looking! was always my fave since a kid! Even just sat on a ship deck this plane looks mean and fast!...

Yeah, I sure will give you its looks. The difference between the Hornet nd the Tomcat is like the difference between a Ferrari and a '67 GTO. One is pretty, one kicks your ass! It's hard for me to believe that the F-14, that fantastic plane with those looks, just barely missed being deployed in Vietnam. It would have been like ID4!
