come on people, use your common sense, this is so obviously about LSD... listen at the lyrics... the flowers growing incredibly hiiiiiiiiiiighhhhh ... and the taxis are waiting to take you awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay.... climb in the back with your head in the clouds and you're gone...... come on folks.. john was bullshitting when he said it wasnt about LSD.

Benimalover is right. It's not about drugs. It came from a painting Johns son Julian did in school. Lucy was one of his classmates and he called the stars in the painting diamonds. Part of enjoying the song is understanding the artists intent. But if it means something else to someone, thats cool too. That's what music is about.

LSD 1967 Libra Solidus Denarius = LSD
Libra=Pounds
Solidus=shillings
Denarius=Pence
1967 England did away with old money Pouds, shillings and pence and went with a decimal coinage. You can make an argument that LSD stands for the old money. This would have been a hot topic in 1967 when the song was recorded. Just a thought that I doubt anyone had thought of.
