I think it had a proximity fuse. It explodes before the impact.

no proxyfuse.the patriot missle was a verry unreliable project that got canceled because IT ALLMOST NEVER HIT ITS TARGETS!

I worked as the operator of the Patriot missile in the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force.
It was very substantial days.
