What exactly would be the practical purpose of the US government covering up the existance of aliens? It seems to make much more sense for the government to make up alien stories to keep things like secret weapons secret

The Air Force has no replacement of the blackbird because they have the U-2 and they have very hi-tech satellites these days. A fast flying SR-71 replacement is not needed.
