Lockheed SR71 Blackbird Cap2
BackThe Lockheed SR-71, unofficially known as the Blackbird and by its crews as the Habu or the sled, was an advanced, long-range, Mach 3 strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed from the Lockheed YF-12A and A-12 aircraft by the Lockheed Skunk Works. The SR-71 line was in service from 1964 to 1998. Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was the man behind many of the design's advanced concepts. The SR-71 was one of the first aircraft to be shaped to reduce radar cross section. However, the aircraft was not stealthy and still had a fairly large radar cross-section. The aircraft flew so fast and so high that if the pilot detected a surface-to-air missile launch, the standard evasive action was simply to accelerate. Thirteen aircraft are known to have been lost, all through non-combat causes

beautifully but dangerous plane. cause of deformation through pressure, and heat in flight it looses massivly fuel on ground .. ist has to. otherwise the pressure would crack the fueltanks. one little mistake on start or landing, and the crew ends in a hell of fire !

the fuel is CRAZY different from any thing you have ever known. you drop a match in a bucket of its JP7 fuel (thats the name of the fuel) and the match with go out, just like in water. even the exhaust gasses of the plane are not hot enough to egnight the after burners. they havee to use a sepreate starter sysestm. the fuel is also used to cool the serface of the air craft at super sonic speeds

It may ignite only at "higher" temperatures. But fuel is fuel. It´s not very healthy. I would´nt like to be one of the men on ground, while fuel is dripping all arround. But .. she´s a very fine jet. She´s made for war and spionage, not for the greenparty. Old rule .. you can´t have it all

Yep, the only aircraft that flies on insecticide.

They used twin Chevy 454 motors on a cart to start it. I will be making a video of Blackbird airpark sometime soon.

None were lost in hostile actions, all were lost due to mechanical problems, or pilot error.

One was shot down in Vietnam on a Rec flight by a SA-2, but the USAF said it had engine problems [american propaganda] FYI.

I used to teach egress for it, and I know of NO instance where one was shot down. PERIOD. I would have known. (Can't say the same for U2s...)

no SR-71 Blackbird's were ever shot down LOL what are you talking about?
"Sr-71 shot down over vietnam" i think thats texasfathead propaganda.. which is plain sad

Really sorry they didn't keep it just for fun. A ride in that plane must have cost a fortune, but well worth it...! How about the 13 or so lost? What happened to these planes?
