I wish I never stopped taking hapkido; I got to high brown (right before red, then black at the studio I went to). time is such an issue =(

I kind of agree. if i attacked my aikido instructor with less than 100% commitment the outcome would be more pain for me(usually a strike or kick). an attack with no intent means you are pulling back at the moment when you need to be "out" fully. this is when damage is done.

If the attack is static and telegraphed i think the art will not work in a real situation. I have been doing aikido for a couple of years and have seen this approach at some schools and seminars where people get upset if you take the "wrong" stance or if you counterattack. at the club i attend there is no stance and also no distinction between uke or nage.the grabs are only for training in a real fight if you are grabbed it is over for you. you should be moving to deal with the attack already.
