Best cover ever. From the great sound of his Strat into his Plexi Marshall and the incredible natural talent of his playing in this song...it's my favourite live song of his.

actually cmichelinman, the deads soundman was a chemist named owsley stanley, who was known for making copious amounts of powerful acid. and yes, when he came to monterey he brought a fuckload of LSD. But they were called purple haze, because his favorite color was purple, and that was the color he made the pills. Jimi took some before this show, and timed it so it would peak during his finale. Owsley was also famous for designing famous grateful logos and creating the Wall of Sound.

Owsley's LSD was famous for being top-quality and 'clean', no speed or other crap mixed in - that's why Jimi could do this gig while tripping - and that's why people nowadays should be wary about doing LSD, because you never know what kind of crap is mixed in with it :-(

I read in Rolling Stone that the Dead's soundman made the acid that went about at Monterey some 40,000 hits of "Owsley" as they called it...the soundman's last name coincidently...thanks for the posting...awesome!
