"Queen of the Night" Lucia Popp: "Der Hölle Rache"

Back

April 1964 "The Magic Flute" Mozart (Maestro Otto Klemperer)
The cast for this recording was a "who's who". It included Janowitz, Gedda, Berry, Frick, Schwarzkopf and Ludwig.

The following link is to a TV interview with Lucia 1n 1987. She mentions this recording, which was her break-through at age 25.

Here also is the link to a more fiery performance by Lucia at the New York Met in 1970

One can really hear how her voice evolved over the years! She sounds so young here! I love her beautiful sound and phrasing and musicality at every age, of course.

She made one of the toughest arias sounds so simple...Amazing woman!

Funny thing, before she recorded this she got some dental work done and her mouth was numb. AHAHA. :] I love Lucia Popp

THE BEST ON THIS ARIA!

This is probably the most technically perfect performance, but it lacks any emotional power, which is crucial to the opera at this point.

this might be your opinion...
when i was listening to her.. i heard anger and cruelty of a mother saying to her daughter to kill her husband ( of the daughter )

this version of the aria is the most perfect in everything .... amazing voice !!!

This is not an easy aria, but she sings it with ease...an excellent example of having the necessary range and the right technique. Listen to how comfortable she sounds singing this!

hahaha - nice comment! I'll put the link in the notes above to Lucia singing this live at the New York Met in 1970. I think that has more fire. Remember, when this was recorded in 1964 she was fresh out of Slovakia and not as comfortable with German as she was later.
