Hey, I wonder if you could answer a few questions i had:
I have a Dell Vostro 1500 for a year now, and i've tried installing Ubuntu (fiesty) on it, I've constantly faced hardware compatability problems with the 1500. Problems with the headphone jack (sound continues to come out from speakers & phones), touchpad sensitivity issues etc. Wonder if you faced any of that? I'm a beginner, so i really didn't have a choice but o switch to XP!

Install the latest Ubuntu 8.04. And you'll have no issues.I had those issues too, with Feisty. But now everything it's ok cause I have 8.04.
Good luck.

Also, can i expect the hardware to work well (i mean wireless/sound/headphones) right after install, or does this involve installation of alsa drivers, restricted drivers etc?

thanks.
