Making eye contact with an audience is one of the most difficult tasks a performer must overcome. Jack Benny is a master of making eye contact, as you can see in this tape. Eye contact is 60 percent of the success of his style. His eyes roam around the entire studio. No other performer makes eye contact like this!

Jack Benny was a genius. He could bring down the house just by pausing! The inside joke here that many people don't know about these days is his being dishonest about his age... it was part of the character he developed back in the 1930's, which was vain and cheap. In real life he was exactly the opposite. Anyway, in the early 40's he began telling people he was 39 and continued that tradition into the 50's.

That was great! I love watching the oldtime masters of comedy like Jack Benny and Groucho Marx. They don't make 'em like they use to.
