Gourds were the first texan or blue grass band to do it. Leftover Salmon has played it a few times. I know for once at Salmonfest in 2002.

It's a common misconception. For some reason everyone likes to attribute this to Phish or to Garth Brooks and a group of other country singer. But nope, as stated previously, it's The Gourds.
