Gong came into being almost by accident in the late sixties when Daevid Allen was refused entry back into Britain following European dates with Soft Machine. Deciding to stay in Paris Allen began working alongside Gilli Smyth and various musicians on what would eventually be recognised as Gong. The first recognised recordings from the band were Magick Brother, Mystic Sister in 1970. Followed by albums such as Camembert Electrique, Flying Teapot, Angels Egg and You. These last three albums followed the fortunes of Zero The Hero and told the tale of the pothead pixies and was told over the course of the next three albums and became the Radio Gnome Invisible Trilogy. This mythological story was extremely popular and the resultant albums sold exceptionally well however following the departure of core members Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth and Steve Hillage citing the age old musical differences reason for leaving the band Gong moved in a more jazz oriented direction with the addition of Allan Holdsworth alongside Pierre Moerlen and Didier Malherbe. Allen, Smyth and Hillage have all recorded as solo artists and Smyth subsequently formed the offshoot Mother Gong. Occasionally the three have re united as was seen by the release of the live Gong album recorded in 1977.

Various permutations of Gong have worked together over the years under various names including Mother Gong, Expresso Gong, Gongmaison, Planet Gong and so on and so forth and also included an amazing array of musical talent moving through the ranks.

Gongmaison came about after Daevid Allen's return to the UK and more importantly following a French gig with former Gong member Didier Malherbe deciding to work with Didier again in a line up of Gong. The subsequent Gongmaison was formed in April 1989 The band took their name as it alluded to the mixture of house/jazz that the band played at the time which in fact was nearer house music although still contained all the relevant Gong elements of old. This performance comes from the bands performance in the early nineties and was filmed at the Fridge in Brixton. The line up includes key members of Gong Daevid Allen, Didier Malherbe and Gilli Smyth.

I fail to understand why anyone would want to come to a gong video page and make libellous, insensitive and confrontational claims against some free thinking artists/musicians from the 70's who were having some fun. I think The Daily Mail letters column would be more fitting for that purpose. Music, believe it or not, for some people is all about having fun. Nothing to do with politics or ego, bullshit, problems, negativity or anything else. That's being free. Accept it. Embrace it, enjoy it!

Actually as a reply to that joyless prick droogless,Allen advocated a drug free lifestyle as far back as 73. The whole 'gong mythology' was a pythonesque stab at the rather boring po faced political stance taken by their musical contemporaries.There really is no need to hate a bunch of immature hippys, who eventually grew up having taken mainly positive things from their youthful experimentation. Did some nasty hippy mess up Droogless and Burgersoft777.RELAX BOYS.

Peel back the top layer to a lot of these so called revolutionary dope advocators and you will find something altogether less warm blooded underneath, something like jim davidson with a hippy wig on it..hanging out for a year on fathers credit card before jetting of to the far east to buy up a load of kids to make cheap trainers in sweat shops,a bit like dave brock but maybe slightly better behaved. someone like George Bush with espergers syndrome. camembert electrique is rather good though.

Ho Ho Ho ....Burger demonstrates quite clearly that his digit is intact. You get a lot of time to think about the value of such counter culter hero's when you are imprisioned for rioting..( poll tax) belive me the likes of Gong are hot air and nothing more I dispise them.
