FGM/C is very serious and should not be taken lightly yes it is a cultural practice, and yes it has been around for a couple of centuries but it is harmful to women.

i saw an episode of Oprah once wher there was this lady Dr. who spent her life in Africa helping girls who had babies and they had ripped and torn and instead of getting them help-the family would put them in a room because they smelled bad (from diseases and complications from the ripping) and basically left them there to die. i could never understand why they had such complications and Oprah's show never explained it. Until just two days ago-I had no idea that this is why. So sad.
