I once heard an A-10 pilot mention that if they did try that 17-18 second continuous fire they would A) stop the plane in mid-flight and B) melt the gun.

Its just a teory that comes from math. Avenger force is same as one engine on full throtle(or something like that)so if one engine was disabled and other was running on 70-90% theoreticly it would stop or go back if the burst was long enough, but thats just a theory and u never will know if its possible :)

If the force of the gun is the same as that of the engine but in the opposite direction, the resulting force on the plane would be 0.
IE as if it were gliding without using the engines or the gun.
If the engine was providing 90% of the force of the gun, the plane would slow down as much as if the engine was using 10% of its power in reverse.
