Well, I believe the sweeping technique in itself is far older. I've seen guys like George Benson and Les Paul play arpeggios that way long before Frank Gambale was around. But Frank Gambale did push the sweep-picking idea much further and transformed it into a playing style. He also wrote books and recorded instructional videos on sweep/speedpicking, which has pretty much made him the authority on the subject. I've never seen anyone apply the technique quite as musically as he does.

I could be wrong but I believe frank was the innovator of the entire sweep-speed picking technique. This is some of the best I've ever heard from him. Unfotunately the sweep technique enabled a lot of musically stillborn players to fly around the neck with prefabricated licks and runs pasted together that paid little attention to the music underneath it and gave the entire genre a bad name. Frank was probably the unwitting innovator of shred-metal too which also similarly screwed itself.

I know i hate how most shredders use sweeping, like after a while they just use the same shapes over and over. Not really playing anything cool note wise, just patterns played at a rapid tempo. Frank put sweeping in a musical context.
