Greenwash Guerrillas Pie Thomas Friedman on Earth Day

Back

Thomas Friedman, the author and NY Times columnist, was invited to Brown University to give a keynote speech on Earth Day, before a packed auditorium. His talk, titled "Green is the new Red White and Blue" was about how corporate environmentalism (based on putting a price on the atmosphere, and investing in biofuels and techno-fixes) can restore America to its "natural place in the global order." Luckily, this outrageous neoliberal capitalist propaganda was interrupted with a suprise visit from the Greenwash Guerrillas. Leaflets were thrown to the crowd, stating:

----------

Thomas Friedman deserves a pie in the face...

* because of his sickeningly cheery applaud for free market capitalism's conquest of the planet

* for telling the world that the free market and techno fixes can save us from climate change. From carbon trading to biofuels, these distractions are dangerous in and of themselves, while encouraging inaction with respect to the true problems at hand.

* for helping turn environmentalism into a fake plastic consumer product for the privileged

* For his long-standing support for the US Occupation of Iraq and the Israeli occupation of Palestine. Such committed support to the US War Machine and its proxy states overseas cannot be masked behind any twisted mask of "green" - the US Military is the largest single emitter of greenhouse gases in the world.

* for his pure arrogance.
On behalf of the earth and all true environmentalists -- we, the Greenwash Guerrillas, declare Thomas Friedman's "Green" as fake and toxic to human and planetary health as the cool-whip covering his face.

Infantile. Do you really think you're advancing any line of debate? If you're so right why not challenge people instead of attacking them with confectionary goods? How exactly were Friedman's ideas or positions refuted by having a cream pie thrown in his face?

Childish stunts like this do enormous damage to the public image and therefore the message of the green movement.

I don't know how old you kids are but you'll look back at this and cringe with embarassment.

Disgraceful.

I still want to know if the pie-throwers drive cars. If they do, then they are hypocrites. Automobiles epitomize the destruction not only of the environment, but also of cultures around the world that have been devastated by the petroleum extraction industry. For example, Iraq.

I am as disgusted as anyone about the Iraq War, but, on balance, I respect and like Friedman and I don't think he deserved this.

Judith Miller and Bill Kristol, for sure -- but not Friedman.

While I don't usually approve of tactics like this, I couldn't help but feel overwhelming joy at this. For years Friedman was a mouthpiece for the NeoCons and consistently advocated their destructive policies on Iraq and energy and economics. Now that he realized the whole NeoCon project is out of fashion he's presenting himself as the new Green Prophet to secure public appearances and book sales for the next phase. He must be exposed for what he is and not be allowed to steal others' hard work.

Tom Friedman is only out for himself. I can't believe people pay consideration to what this idiot says. He's a con man, plain and simple.

Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent.

So I wonder, these kids who pied Thomas Friedman, do any of them drive cars?
vivalajazz (November 13, 2008 at 7:54 am)
I don't think pie throwing really qualifies as 'violence', it's more of an embarrassment thing.

Not that I agree with the pie throwers.
Teratornis (November 14, 2008 at 4:39 am)
Pie throwing is an attempt to use physical force to humiliate and demean someone in public. Therefore it is violence in the same sense that rape is violence. The rapist uses his penis as a weapon to degrade and humiliate his victim; the pie-thrower uses his pie.

The victim does not know the nature of the assault in advance. He doesn't know if the attacker is coming at him with a pie, a knife, a gun, etc. The attacker sends the message "I could have hurt you."
