ok, i'm wondering on the following isuue for years: can someone please (!) tell me what word Michael is saying on the chorus:
"No words spoken, no need to ----"? is it "speak" or "this guilt"?
JinzoCreed (July 11, 2008 at 5:15 pm)
Yes, it's "no need to speak"...
;-)

Hmmm. I had:

No need... this gift...
JinzoCreed (July 14, 2008 at 10:00 am)
The official lyrics say "no need to speak"... god knows would I say :)

This song was also a B-side on the European singles of Losing My Religion 1991... I got a copy of it when I was 12. I wasn't into music yet, but both songs made such a big impression. To me, Fretless is the best of the two. Chilling, personal, angry, ambiguous lyrics... A reminder that once upon a time, Michael Stipe was the best lyricist alive... But it didn't belong on Out of Time. Although it would arguably have been the best track (in competition with Feedback, Losing, Half a World)...

Beautiful, haunting song - great vocals by Michael and Kate Pearson of the B-52s. Very nice imagery Thank You for posting this underrated gem. Now on to find REM's cover of First We Take Manhattan, also from this era.

No doubt , It's about a love triangle? thats what I've always assumed. That soundtrack is great.I guess the Australian director asked the artist to put themselves 10 yrs.into the future and give him something they thought they would be doing in ten yrs.[since the movie took place 10 yrs.into the future]He got some pretty dark tunes-guess they figured they'd all be depressed in 10 yrs.I love micheals voice with kate pearsons, and nice to hear her voice doing something serious,or different.
