The slapping is unequalled but the fretless needs a LOT of work.

The truth is that fretless bass for a "beginner" would be more difficult to sound good because of the fact that you have to care about intonation by then.
But when you're talking about the professionals... There's no such thing as "more difficult instrument".
It's a matter of personal choice and what one resonates with. Respect and understanding is what these masters understand. Unlike squabblers.

I think that the reason a fretless bass is harder for beginners is that most beginners don't have the ear training they need inorder to be able to hit the actual notes. The reason professionals can play fret less is that a good professional bass player like victor can play a whole song with his eyes closed all because he has had years of experience and knows what the next note from the current note he is playing should sound like.

What makes a fretless any harder?
An instrument is as hard as you make it. The limits and difficulties are defined by the player. With a new issue developing in intonation when approaching the fretless bass, several expressive qualities and additions to versatility are present.
How can one achieve that same versatility on a fretted instrument? Surely that is much harder than the simple issue of intonation.

Repeating some wooten-preach, I see.

I agree completely. Victor isn't made out of some miracle-metal. He's flesh and bone. Just like Jaco. Just like Flea. Just like me. Just like a new born baby. You must let go of the Ideas of "Difficulty" or "Superiority" and let the music flow through you. It just takes experience to let go more.
