Do you have to use plectrums or is it optional?

at the halo 3 video (and you know what i'm talking about) you had the nerve to say it was fake and you're ASKING IF YOU NEED A PLECTRUM! in a beginner video for banjo's.
i laugh at you...

OH NOES I'VE BEEN RUMBLED.
I was just curious as to whether everyone uses plectrums (or finger picks, which as a type of plectrum, asshat) or whether some people use their fingers.
You don't know how to use apostrophes LOL

No you do not need to use them. In the older styles especially there are many different ways to play. "Classical" banjo used finger rolls without picks most of the time. Oldtimey styles (my favorite) use some finger picking and also clawhammer style playing without picks, it's up to you, just have fun!

Thank you.

Wrong about the string, but...ok.

Wikipedia:
He is also acknowledged as major contributor to the physical development of the modern 5-string banjo. Whereas the instrument's resonating chamber had formerly been constructed from a gourd (like the banjo's African ancestors and cousins), Sweeney is said to have popularized the use of a drum-like resonating chamber. Moreover, he is often credited with adding a fifth, bass string to the instrument, which should not to be confused with the high-pitched, thumb or drone string.

Yes, perhaps the bass string although I've yet to see actual proof of that, but he did not add the drone or "chanterelle" as some call it which is a common characteristic of most African "lutes."

It's silly to be that fussy. This isn't a dog show or a contest. Music is organic and flows as we feel it. Music comes from the soul and the application of restriction is a tool not the driver. You can play a little forward , a little behind, on the beat.. I don't think he is trying to win a ribbon.

You're right you can play with the time and warp it around but it's usually only good to do that when playing with a rhythm section thats playing in time. Since he's playing by himself I thought it was a small issue. Other than that I thought it was a good video.
