A group of Americans, retired teachers, recently
went to France on a tour.
Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived
in Paris by plane.
At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate
his passport in his
carry on. 'You have been to France before,
monsieur?' the customs
officer asked sarcastically. Mr. Whiting admitted
that he had been to
France previously

'Then you should know enough to
have your passport
ready.' The American said, 'The last time I was
here, I didn't have to
show it.' 'Impossible. Americans always have to show
your passports on
arrival in France !' The American senior gave the
Frenchman a long hard
look. Then he quietly explained. 'Well, when I came
ashore at Omaha
Beach on D-Day in '44 to help liberate this country,
I couldn't find any
Frenchmen to show it to.'

Nice video, now can someone explain to me, without making a my team vs. your team political argument, how government control over our environment, our educational system, our airwaves, and our behavior somehow means "Freedom"? Freedom from what? Ourselves?
mgarthoff (June 6, 2008 at 1:50 am)
Govt control? No. But gov't has a legit role. I got a great public school education but can my daughter? That shouldn't depend on wealth. The govt can't control the environ, but corp's won't police themselves. We need some level of regulation. True, not overbearing or red tape for its own sake, but it's hugely important. The gov't doesn't control my behavior but when I get a speeding ticket, it reminds me to keep others safe. The neocon delusion that govt is evil is dumb. Dems aren't socialists.

"but when I get a speeding ticket, it reminds me to keep others safe."
so what about when i want to smoke a joint after a long hard day?
i have to spend the night in a police cell, against my will, as a prisoner, with no freedom.
you only have freedom if you do as your told. Which defies the point of it in the first place.

Thanks for answering with a "my team vs. your team" point, which I said I didn't want. Would you like a link to the clip where Obama says he wants to punish people who don't have an annual health exam?
Try defending that view, without, first, sounding like a totalitarian, and second, without labeling anyone a "neo-con" or anything else. Again, the question is How does more government control somehow means "Freedom"?

George W years (2001-2006): 7,932 deaths
If you are surprised when you look at these figures, so was I. These
figures mean that the loss from the two latest conflicts in the Middle
East are LESS tha n the loss of military personnel during Bill Clinton's
presidency when America wasn't involved in a war!
