Green Fields of France

Back

This is my tribute to those who fought in World War One, in fact all vets of all wars. As a solider, I know the waste of war first hand and WW I was one of the most wasteful. But at the same time, I know you must fight for your freedoms.

Eric Bogle wrote the song, Green Fields of France, also known as No Man's Land. Piet Chielens, coordinator of the In Flanders Fields War Museum in Ypres, Belgium, once checked all 1,700,000 names that are registered with the Commonwealth War Commission. He found no less than ten Privates William McBride. The song is covered by the group Dropkick Murphy.

Steve27302, Apologies my friend, all of us in the west benifitted from the wars, in the end.
I think even Russia "might" agree, considering its current social status.

But the waste, Ohh the waste.
We cant let it happen again.
But it's still happening today.

Sorry that this isnt a good comment, but fitzpado's slideshow was very moving.

Regards from an Aussie.

Most of you have no idea why this war - and WWII - happened. You're too young. I am of the generation that benefited from WWII. As we get older, we appreciate why our forbears did what they did. Some of it was wasted and some of it tried to move us forward. What the allied powers did to Germany directly led to what happened in the '30's. WWI was caused by diplomatic screw-ups. WWII had to be fought to defeat the powers in Europe that arose as a result of WWI. Japan came along as an aside.

France were defending themselves against an agressive German monarchy that was trying to expand its empire and the Americans were attempting, successfuly, to gain an economic foothold in Europe

just think some of us wouldnt be here if the Germans won the war. God bless the British, French, Russian, American and every allied soldier for giving their life to save people who they have never met. im British and would do the exact same thing that the brave soldiers who fought in WW1 & WW2 because i know that we will fight and fight until the last man and no one will ever break the boarders of this royal land. i am saluting the soldiers of the armies of the free world. R.I.P .thank you.

Sure is the Great War. Do you really believe that the Nazis would make a tiny bit of a truce, even on Christmas?

Germany, Austria-Hungary, Serbia, and Russia were as imperialistic as you can be, and they were monarchies. The UK has always been an imperialist nation, and i bet you the US did not go to war without one selfish thought in mind. The US squeezed money out of European nations after the war.
