That is a common misconception. It is possible to recover from flat spins in many airplanes. The term "flat spin" should not be confused with "unrecoverable spin". Watch my video of the inverted flat spin... it is very flat and we recovered easily.

In order to "flatten" the spin in an Extra we add power and opposite aileron. To recover simple reduce power, center ailerons, and recover from the normal spin.

Gyroscopic Precession and Adverse Aileron Drag cause the spin to go "flat".

By definition any spin with a pitch attitude less than 45 degrees nose down is considered a flat spin. An inverted flat spin in a Pitts S2 will often reach a fully flat attitude and is easily recovered from...
