I was born in the wrong decade....But im not gonna let that stop me from exploring this timeless genre...

And also the best saxophonist of the era - Stan Getz was there too. I should have said that whilst Ella came both years, the others only came once each year if I remember correctly. She was at her very best and the audience adored her.

How gorgeous! I grew up with the Johnny Mathis rendition, but Ella's is just how I think it should sound.

I keep thinking she's a little off tune, then she sings the next note and it falls into place. Brilliant woman!

To each his or her own but Ella's version is more feminine, more sensual, and tender. It floats. It's like a cool midnight breeze after a hot, humid day.

I was fortunate enough to see her sing live - twice - in Manchester, UK in the fifties. Magic.

You saw Ella live- twice ! what a cherished memory that must be. If you want to share that, I'd love to know about it. God- seeing Ella in her prime.

Thanks for asking Martidee. She was with a programme run by Norman Grantz called "Jazz at the Philharmonic". In the two consecutive years she came she had with her Roy Eldridge, Oscar Peterson, her ex-husband Ray Brown and the wonderful Oscar Peterson. Yes I was very lucky.

i'm also a jazz singer, and i am deeply jealous of ella's talent, her voice is amazing and i stand firm when i say it will never get better than this!
