Amalgams were an option years ago when no other filling material realistically existed. However, composites, (tooth-colored fillings), aren't as likely to crack or create microfractures in the teeth and are not as toxic to the environment. I wouldn't get amalgam fillings removed due to the fear of mercury toxicity, but I would simply for the tooth's long-term prognosis. It's really a moot issue though, because amalgam will be banned for environmental reasons in the next 10 years.

Think of these numbers next time a dentist tries to convince you to take out your amalgam fillings:
You get 20 times more mercury exposure from the food you eat.
It would take about 450-500 fillings to equal the minimal amount of mercury exposure that health standards say might cause an effect (most I've ever seen in a mouth is about 12)
You will get way more mercury exposure during the removal of fillings than by just leaving them there.

Incorrect.
W.H.O. report 1991 states that dental amalgam represents the greatest exposure to mercury - more than all other sources combined, including seafood.
Amalgam removal is NOT an easy money-maker. It is a highly dangerous procedure to patient and staff alike. This includes the disposal of what is *now* Hazardous Waste.

"So it does leach."
"It does, definitely, yes."
Well thanks. Many years of pain and thinking I was crazy could have been prevented if i had at least the information that mercury might be unsafe, so I could make an informed choice.
However, I am glad I have come out the other side as someone who has gotten rid of amalgam-based mercury poisoning so I can inform others.

Just wanted to say to everyone do your homework. Mercury for our purposes comes in three forms- organic, mercury salts, and free mercury vapor. Organic mercury is by far the most dangerous to our bodies. Mercury vapor does "leak" from our fillings. The amount of mercury from our fillings in comparison to environmental exposure to mercury ie. from automobile exhaust in urban areas is negligible. Please check out the scientific study on pubmed. Search for Casa Pia children's amalgam trial.

Dr. Huggins got rich convincing people with debilitating diseases to take out loans to go through his ridiculous "detoxification" system. His license was revoked in America because what he was doing was unethical and ALL the peer-reviewed scientific literature has shown that mercury in amalgams is safe.
