Amsterdam: The Bicycling Capitol of Europe

Back

Amsterdam has created a bicycle friendly city that promotes a healthier, more active lifestyle for its residents. With people meeting face to face instead of bumper to bumper, the city challenges us to rethink our car centered-lives here in the United States.

There weren't any bike taxis when this movie was made - the bike taxis are here only a couple of years now, after the yellow trams disappeared (being replaced by the combino's... yech).

Great video!

I didnt even know that we have a holiday for it lol. And you dont dont need a license to ride.
Only as a kid, you get this test at school but thats just to check that you know that you have to put your light on and stuff.

but great vid. I enjoyed watching it.

It's not that dangerous when you remember that:
- most cardrivers expect and care about bikers
- there are a lot of dedicated cyclingpaths
- mosts Dutch learn to cycle almost immediately when they can walk, and do it all the time
- most people cycle pretty slow, only about 10 mph.

I only wear a helmet on my MTB, not when I ride my bike in the city.

YOu don't need a bikerslicence. Other than that, you might find our country a bit socialistic. In an economic way that is, with high taxes and lots of forms and rules for everything. A bit to much IMO. OTOH, we are very liberal in prostitution, drugs etc. That's good.

That is good. Drugs and prostitution is good. I don't think it really matters if a country is socialistic these days. I don't think anywhere is operating under a free market system. The USA is just one big mercantile nightmare with the constitution hanging by a thread. 2/3s of the world is either a dictatorship or a "democracy" that tosses away individual rights whenever the mob gets goaded into fear. Anyways... Peace and happiness be with the dutch people! Humanity will be free one day!

Why cant bicycles not work in these cities if you dont mind?

Sorry to comment but the Europpean Union has being the greatest thing for Europe it seems up to the WW2 every generation of European leaders would just start another war that wrecked the place. In the 50 yrs of the EU we have had a generation grow up who have not being slaughtered in some European field. Sure there will always be diffrences but we talk each other to death now, a lot better

I visited Amsterdam a couple of years ago and was inspired to get back on my bike. Im convinced that the old Granny bike is the key its safe, easier then walking and the quickest thing in a city. Every journey time is door to door. I live in Dublin which is quite hilly but the Granny bike and its relaxed style is the only way to get around. Go try it. ps my bike is a grandad bike with 7 speed gears which make hills easy.
