Its b/c the A380 is so massive, b/c I am American, I prefer Boeing, but I think Airbus is trying a little to hard, I noticed the concept A350 is a Airbus'd up version of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, to bad Airbus can't get its hands on the new technology of the 787, so currently I think the Boeing 787 is the only passenger a/c to have new materials, the A380 still uses old way aircraft materials.

yea, they help slow the aircraft down, and they also completely stop all lift on the wing.

The test is designed to see the stopping distance of the aircraft without the aid of reverse thrust. This is a requirement by the FAA. In reality you would use reverse thrust but if the brakes can already stop the aircraft in such short distance imagine with reverse thrust.
