Monty Python - The first Zulu War

Back

A sketch from Monty Python from their movie, Meaning of Life. Perkins (Eric Idle) lost his leg and Ainsworth (John Cleese) and Pakenham-Wales (Michael Palin) along with a doctor (Graham Chapman), a Sergeant (Terry Jones) and a very strange man (Terry Gilliam) go out for a party....I'm sorry a SEARCHparty! Enjoy!

I'd say blase' rehash of silly pap that does nothing for the sketch and cheapens the whole effort. This starts off as a brilliant bit of writing but obviously falls apart at the end. I think it falls apart on purpose, because they're poking fun at the way their sketches always end without any real resolution, as in the "fourth wall" comment above. Graham Chapman with his eyeglass popped out at just the perfect moment is brilliant. When they were good, there was no better comedy in the world.

Awesome. Didn't expect Monty Python to do a sketch involving the Anglo-Zulu war.

"A tiger in Africa?"

My favourite Python moment is the two men dressed as a tiger nervously looking around like children being told off. :)

They're breaking the fourth wall; the sketch has been written with a tiger in it even though the battle was fought in Africa, where the ARE no tigers. Some of the characters are questioning this strange detail while others are trying to stop them drawing attention to the "bad and inaccurate" writing.

It's a bizarre concept but pure genious nonetheless!
