Nah, it was because the war office was cheap. Red was the cheapest dye which is why it was used.

The red was to hide the blood of our friends - helps moral on the line - and hey to Carolina. And yes the Zulu Impi (Ibutho in Zulu, meaning armoured warrior) were amazingly brave, strong men that I have utter repect for. Thank god we have peace now.
