From a modern, open-air opera production, the story is based on a mixture of fairy tales by Collodi, Grimm and Perrault, set to music by Hans Werner Henze in 1980. In this scene, Pollicino ("Little Thumb" in Italian) overhears his impoverished parents' plan of leading him and his six brothers deep into the forest and of leaving them there because they no longer have the means to feed their children. They do not want to see their children starve to death in front of their eyes. Worried about what is about to happen the next day, Pollicino looks up at the sky. He sees the stars and an idea comes to him - of leaving a trail of stones in the forest to lead him and his brothers back home.

This has a Britten-esque sound, but even so, I still like what I am hearing. It's got a lot of clarity, like the brilliant wind concertos by Hindemith in the 40's that Henze so stupidly criticized.

Henze deserves to be recognised in his lifetime. On the basis of quality and variety he stands with Britten head and shoulders above opera composers post WW2.
