you are correct, the gov., we the people don't want to go to issues that have bad things in them. we tend to just try and ignore those things we don't want to touch "dance around the issues" and go to what you said as the safer issues. for years slavery was ignored and was never touched (that slavery thing was just a example). but good analisis of the song man...or girl

i think that the signs are issues which obsess both society and on a larger level society. everyone has a cause. people are concerned about the cia, the nra, etc. meating eating, big business, pharmaceticals - etc, etc.

all of which we obviously seem to be more important than what is perhaps the most obvious and easily seen issue that we all encounter every day (and most of us ignore, keen to focus on the safer, more abstract 'issues') - feeding, clothing and housing the homeless.

They didn't break up, and it's not known to anyone if they'll get back together, they've said it themselves. They split up on a good note thus, "Leaving the door open," and like most good things in life they if ever will get back together when "the time is right." They've all said it themselves. Regardless, seeing the paths they've all chosen on there own careers, SOAD would definably be different in a manner of speaking.
