Textron- Leadership Development
BackNine business units make up Textron. The prior model was to be a holding company, but now they are moving to a company that takes advantage of all businesses through networking and leadership development. The goal was to develop leaders that were able to move around Textron as a single business and develop their capabilities while providing consistency in leadership with maintaining the highest quality.
To address these goals, a structure was put in place starting at the top by collaborating with Wharton on an executive leadership development program for executives. The strategic program lasts two weeks and exposes leaders to a variety of things they need to know to conduct business globally, put together a strategy and most importantly, how to leverage the knowledge of other leaders across the company.
The group is kept small, just 35 leaders, and is offered every other year. Participants are selected or nominated by senior most leaders. The program has been in place since 1999. There are further programs and pieces for different leadership levels.
Textron has a couple of mid level manager programs for the VP/Director levels. There is a program, similar to the Wharton program, conducted through a partnership with Thunderbird who is well known for developing international leadership. While trying to be more global, mid level managers develop these skills to better work with individuals across the world by being exposed to functional skill sets and leadership concepts.
