how did this become jazz vs. classical? art is art no matter what formula is used to create or analyze it. this performance is beautiful just for the sounds (jazz soloing) and is illuminated by this video production (classical symbols).

I'm a jazz pianist. I appreciate classical music. But I can't stand the folks of classical music who bind rules to everything. It's not math for christs sake, it's an art.

I don't know if anyone has brought this up, but why did this transcription start in concert pitch, then go to Bb? Were they too lazy to put the entire thing in one key?!?!?!

this song is written with whole tone scale harmonised chords/melodies, nothing unworldly complicated, but very experimental and ahead of the time :) Or it might have been half/whole tone. I get confused my I was talking to my tutor about it. Did you know the pianist on the record get getting it wrong on the recordings? :)

its just not typical of classical music to have a modulation in the third beat then again a measure later. the ambiguity created by the extensions makes it possibly to do these crazy modulations (up a minor third in giant steps) and use funny non-chord tones.
it also appears to me that i am not, as you implied, a jazz prick, but you sir, are very much a classical prick.

your explanation for it being far more than just extensions and substitutions is KEY CHANGES and MODULATION? woooow, ive never heard of those before..they must be part of this crazy advanced Jazz Harmony i've heard about?
The thing I love about jazz-theory-pricks, is that you guys defend shit like Coltrane Changes to the death..and I just laugh at the very real possibility that Trane himself CAME UP WITH IT using an ENIRELY DIFFERENT SYSTEM than jazz-theory-pricks analyze it with.
