They knew what they were doing when it came to recording and mic placement. Notice how his drums do not sound like cardboard boxes on anything. This may have somthing to do with the sound engineers choice but I get the feeling Buddy knew what he was doing on that front aswell.

unquestionably the best there ever was. BR hitting the mic unexpected like that, on the upstroke, when alot of players would have a loose grip at that point, and could have easily dropped the stick. Not only does he not drop the stick, but he hits the mic so hard, the mic is pushed away. Buddy Rich and Papa Jo Jones were probably 100 years ahead of their time, drummers today still dont come close to comparing to either of them.
