Yep, a whammy bar is another name for the tremolo arm, which is what Leo Fender dubbed it - even though technically incorrect. Some call it a vibrato arm, also.

The answer to your question is "Yes" - I suppose you're referring to the Fender's tremolo arm - Hank B. Marvin was the first acknowledged 'expert' with it and it was his early 'trademark' when the Shads came out of Cliff's shadow (sorry about the pun).

Thank you so much for the straight, and polite answer! I checked your profile quickly and it makes sense a British man of your generation would know about The Shadows. I like when fans share their knowledge. I'm a Cliff fan myself but I appreciate the Shads sound and influence on rock music. I have no idea if a whammy bar and tremolo arm are the same thing or not! I heard a Chris Isaak song the other day and had to compare it to the Shadows. Yup, inspired and copied.
