A number of reasons why good lasers are more expensive.

-most lasers advertise peak power, this laser is average power
-beam quality is very poor on the cheap lasers with mode changing and high divergence
-durability is limited on the cheap lasers and most don't last long. This laser can last for years

and basically performance in general is much better on this laser.

there so expensiveDecent 50MW lasers from china are only £10 (and there better than i thought so why is it like 10 times as mutch for only 2.55 times the power?

Not at the dogs skin but it will hurt the dogs eyes. So NEVER point high power lasers at people or animals.

I see how people would want something like this to use, say, more or less as a toy. Perhaps to show off to friends, lighting candles, and such. I've always liked laser pointers.

But, what would be a more practical use for a burning laser pointer such as this one?

The high burning power gives a laser a brighter beam which is useful for many applications such as pointing at objects during the day or making laser displays.
