Vertical take off on the B variant, better stealth capabilities, and just more new things

the f-35, as siad before, is just entering flight testing of the first prototype, so it is highly doubtful that they put anythin up against it in any way becasue it is sitll testing

The first prototype hasnt even finished flight testing, so it is highly doubtful that it has gone up against any migs. Frankly the plane, now costing over 60 million each is getting closer and closer to not really being as great as people make it out to be, like the f-22

i heard a story on TV about how america put this fighter up against two migs because they thought that the migs wouldn't get close enough for a cannon, but they did, so thats why the JSf has a cannon

lol thank you for stating the cost... on another comments page I just asked whether or not it will be replacing the f16 as a low cost fighter
pbeer (May 26, 2008 at 7:01 pm)
hmmm well i'm not sure, i heard two MIG's went up against it and they did pretty well.

The JSF has STOVL (Short take of and vertical landing) which means it can just go straight upwards. I know the F-22 has short take off but i guess you can put more F-35's on a aircraft carrier with Vertical take off?

ok so you answered one question for me... that the f-22 is going to be used on carriers and also I have another question

is the STOVL capability only on the navy version of the JSF?
wartmcbeighn (June 3, 2008 at 7:07 pm)
the STOVL will be Navy and possibly marines, as for it going up against the migs, hard to do whe nthe plane iss still in flight testing. as for the f-22...ridiculously expensive for something not much more capable than anything available

There are three versions of the f-35: the CTOL (conventional take-off and landing), the STOVL which you just mentioned, and the CV or carrier variant which is just a CTOL modified with sturdier fuselage and undercarriage. The STOVL version it's only for the marines as a replacement for the old sea harrier 2. The carrier variant won't be equipped with the airlift fan that enables the STOVL to hover
