this was a good movie although it wads made in 1968 i still wonder how they made some of the technology it seemed way ahead of the time this was made and for the last 30 mins. of this i think they intended to make people walk away saying .. What? to the last 30 mins of this movie

Thats what he turns off. HALs higher functioning. It was the computers ego that caused all this, and Dave the ape man with a simple stick lobotomizes the computers human element and then ironically takes a step into evolution.

what happened to HAL is all explained in 2010: the Year We Made Contact. Great movie, although not as brilliantly directed as this one.
