The Christmas Song - Mel Tormé and Judy Garland Duet

Back

Few people know that Mel co-wrote this famous song with Bob Wells in 1944 - when Mel was 19 years old. "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire..."

The duet is wonderful... but can you count the number of words Judy gets wrong during the song? ("Rainbows" instead of "reindeer" at 1:46 was intentional.)

Gotta love the (mostly) a capella ending starting at 2:20...

Available on the 1963 DVD "Judy Garland Show, Episode 15: The Christmas Show."

Mel was such an awesome guest on this show. This is now on my Christmas playlist. Only Judy can get away with missing the words. She can sing a resturant menu and people would still listen.

I Miss Mel, I saw him at his son Trace Torme's wedding. He sang at the reception and his voice was still golden even when his health was starting to deteriorate.

RIP Mel.

LOL! On one of her delightful "Born in a Trunk" closing segments of her TV series, she opened a drawer in the trunk and said, "I don't suppose there are any lyrics in here..."
