So manually ejecting the clip is what Garand designed it for, not for adding single rounds like all the other rifles of the period, his design was way faster and simpler, Plus reloading with a couple rounds still in the clip will avoid the dreaded ping sound, so mid clip reloading, saves ammo, reduces your chances for a jam, doesnt give away your position(as it would by firing off rounds in between encounters), and just might save your neck by avoiding the ping sound. Mid clip loading is safest.

Putting rounds into an En-Bloc clip is VERY hard when its in the rifle, you need to take the clip out, then add the single rounds to it, then, insert it back into the Magazine, its MUCH easier to quickly eject the partially fired clip, and save it for a partial load later and insert a fresh one, I always do that when I go shooting with my M1.
On a speed demo i clocked myself loading 5 single rounds to a clip in the rifle at 8 seconds, and I then did the standard clip ejection in 4.6 seconds.

would you think it faster to replace the entire clip or to place individual rounds into the clip?
Just wondering.
And to 1airplane21, the sound did get soldiers killed. Just read a few accounts or ask a veteran.

I always conserve my ammo.

finally a man or woman that knows what they're talking about, due to video games most people dont know that it is very easy to top off the m1 garands clip
although for the time it takes id just fire off the last of the rounds =p

The government tried to make clips out of various plastics, to suppress the sound, but none of the concepts proved worthy.

yeah. It kinda sucks as a "hello enemy, I'm reloading! shoot me!"
LoneWolf051 (November 16, 2008 at 10:48 pm)
Yeah it is reloadable, you just press the clip release latch on the left side of the receiver, and the clip pops right out, just as it would if you had fired all 8 rounds off, except instead of an empty clip popping out (making the ping sound), its a clip with rounds still in it popping out, believe me, if you coundn't reload mid clip, the weapon wouldnt have ever seen service. I reload my M1 all the time, Its very easy to do.

im sure its very hard to see a muzzle flash and hear a gun blast. and you would also have a pistol. and seriouly i dont think people stand out in the open when reloading. just shut up because the ping is not as bad as everyone says it is

well, imagine being on ridge with little crevices everywhere. They coud pop out right when they hear the ping. Or some people may have advanced farther than their unit and would be vulnerable.
The sound sounds awesome, but it does attract attention.
