Wings - F-104 Starfighter - Part 2
BackRemember the documentary series called Wings that the Discovery Channel used to air over a decade ago? It also translated into series named Wings Over the Gulf, Wings of the Red Star, Wings Over the Pacific, and even spawned a weekday edition at 6 pm called Weekday Wings. Remember the Wings Marathon on New Year's Day? Here is a little bit of nostalgia from those days. My best friend's uncle taped all of the episodes from one or two marathons and he (the best friend) gave them to me literally days before he went off to basic training. I didn't edit out most of the commercials you see since, well, they do show their age.
Here is part 2 of 2 of the F-104 Starfighter.

Saw my first 104 in Nov 1957, Tyndall AFB, Panama City, Florida. It had a type of safety cover the length of its leading edge (was fairly sharp). Was cool to watch them take off and at the departure end of the runway rotate vertically and climb out of sight. No fuel capability though, and lack of Avionics, etc. But, certainly a cool plane. (retired USAF Avionics)
The Germans crashed a bunch of them; also, we traded the Canadians 104's to take over the Radar sites up there.

I agree that it was used in the wrong way. It would have been more successful if it had been a pure interceptor similar to the way the MIG-25 was used.

re-"deploy as high-flying mig cap".. awesome.. to think someone would try and 'outthink' Kelly Johnson.

Sitting on the coastline of the med I remember hearing the most haunting sound. I looked up to see F104's of the Italian Air Force returning home to Grosseto Air Base.I will admit, as a young boy it was terrifying at first but once I saw the actual F104 that particular sound became awesome.

Yeah the bare metal early RCAF schemes? Those are the best.
