As a teenager, I grew up with the F-104. Dad was an IP at Luke AFB, AZ. This guy flew just about everything the AF had during the 50's & 60's and he absolutely LOVED the Zipper (well, maybe the '86). He loathed the Phantom (Truck with wings). He always maintained if you flew the Zipper as it was meant to fly (High Mach & Energy Management) it was unbeatable. Even at 80 yrs. young, he still has the poise and confidence of the real deal. F-104's & J-79's rule.

RAF Lightnings F3s were quicker higher but i thought both were neck and neck at low level but i`m all ears.

It would've been neat to see a rushed production version of the XF-104 using the J-65 in Korea, if that conflict hadn't ended when it did.

Yeah you have to imagine the low level nuke strike role was risky for terrain and weather issues, but _nothing_ related to enemy action had much of a chance of actually getting them.
