EADS' Hydra UAV concept
BackAviation Week's Defense Technology International (DTI) magazine writes that the German armed forces may field two highly innovative unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems soon, provided funding can be found to pay for full-scale development and production. One of these would introduce a highly unconventional, very agile air vehicle capable of vertical and/or conventional takeoff and landing and able to fly very slowly (33-kt.) as well as at relatively high (350-kt.) airspeeds.
This UAV concept is under development by EADS Defence & Security and small company Glasemann Systems and is known as Hydra (an acronym for Hybrid Drone Aircraft). DTI presents you here with a video of a generic scenario (showed by Glasemann at the ILA 2008 exhibition in Berlin), in which Hydra takes off from a German navy K 130 corvette to investigate a threat on shore. After completing its mission, the UAV lands on a nearby airstrip held by friendly forces. For more info, check out the July/August 2008 issue of DTI on www.aviationweek.com/dti
