Japan Airlines Boeing 747 crosswind landing Hong Kong

Back

Filmed from the checkerboard used for the approach into Kai Tak. Overshoots and then lines it up just to get caught in the wind...again. Unedited. You can hear another enthusiast in the background with a scanner. Airboyd.

I guess you mean very strong crosswind !!?

yes pilots don't land if there is a very strong crosswind for safety sake

but if there is a normal crosswind, it's not a problem, pilots are trained to land at this condition also the aircraft is designed to handle it perfectly

Is that PAPI or somthing else?

This was almost a common landing procedure on the old airport in Hong Kong.
Due to short runway were many pilots doing sideslips to maximally reduce the speed and sawing the tiers and brakes.
Every landing from southwest was on the short final almost as making slalom between the buildings surrounding the airport at the mainland side. And from the northeast as doing downhill skiing on the hills on the island of the new city. (Dramatic described)
Have many journeys on this airport

As if landing at this airport wasn't difficult as it was...throw a little crosswind into the mix and you got a challenge for probably the most seasoned pilot!

Nice vid!

airline pilots rarely make crosswind landings theyre so dangerous

I guess they just have to stay up there until the wind blows there way????
