He is making the DME callout check with altitude.

Ex: 9dme/1000ft, 8dme/850ft, etc...

QNH is not a height, its an altitude.QFE is a height, field elevation. QNH is the atomosphric pressure of mean sea level. It is not used just by the Airlines, it is used in all the flights, all airports. If you fly any place in Europe for example, the first thing you will hear in the ATIS is the QNH of that field, if you are clear of the zone you are given the regional QNH. Some fields want you to use QFE but Its rarely used if never in the Airlines and big aerodromes.

barometric is inturn atmospheric first of all, and here in Australia height is altitude above, as you say, the mean sea level. Europe and Australia use exactly the same units also, so don't get me wrong but my comment earlier was completely factual, perhaps didn't get the exact message across though
