Veterans - Soviets in Afghanistan - March 31 - Pt 1
BackAs part of its series on veterans from some of the world's most brutal and forgotten conflicts Al Jazeera travelled to Russia.
Despite being the Soviet Union's largest military operation since the second world war, the decade-long war in Afghanistan is regarded by many as a humiliation and the Soviet 'Vietnam'.
However many veterans are still physically and psychologically damaged by their time in Afghanistan and say they do not receive adequate support upon their return.

President Carter authorized terrorists in Afghanistan to kill innocent people there in the summer of 1979 in order to bring in the Soviet troops. The US then hired more terrorists, including OBL, to fight the government of Kabul. Now the US is crying like babies because these same terrorists are now killing American troops. This is known as Blowbck, and the US knew the whole time American lives would be lost in future times as a result of arming terrorists.

The western nations funded and armed the mujahedeen to fight the soviets. they turned to taliban. Now the west is fighting against their own weapons and the men they trained guerilla tactics themselves. there'll be no peace in afghanistan. sure, the people need help. but if we're not welcome there, we should'nt go.

Your joking right? We didn't turn on the taliban. They turned on us. Remember 911. Why the hell would we give someone weapons and loads of money and then decide to fight them. Americans aren't stupid. The invasion of Afghanistan was retaliation to the destruction of the world trade center. The US does not have it nearly as bad as the soviets did. The casualties for the US and NATO combined haven't even broken a thousand yet. And thats 7 years after the taliban were defeated.

daviid is pretty much right, we came in there to get the leader of Al Queda and the Taliban were sheltering and protecting him. What do you want, the US to bend over and let Osama terrorize its "citizens"? Thousands died when the twin towers were destroyed.
At least we're there and have toppled the Taliban government. They were originally there fighting the good fight but later did their fair share of atrocities on the people of Afghanistan. At least this gives them a chance at a better life.

Hate to break your love fest goober, but the Taliban HAD NOTHING to do with 9/11. 15 of the hijackers came from Saudi Arabia, 0 (as in zero) came from Afghanistan. You guys are spouting the propaganda bs of the US. You don't have a friggin' clue. And to sit there smug and say, "casualties are less than a thousand so far" is crass to say the least. Why don't you go tell one of their mothers that she can be happy because her son is part of "only" a thousand dead. You're ignorant and sick.

I am a Sicilian American, and the Afghan history of war and oppression sounds like a war movie version of the Sicilian people.
